IoT connection to prevent lung cancer

Fen Technology develops a connected Radon sensor to control the toxic gas

Radon gas is a dangerous colorless, odorless radioactive gas that’s produced by decaying uranium in the soil. It can seep into your home through a crawl space, your basement floor and walls or even a ground level slab. High radon gas levels are the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer for everyone else. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that radon causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year.

The recent Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom of 5 December 2013 (Laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation) that should be adopted by member states in February 2018, establishes that the Member States shall promote actions to identify dwellings with radon concentrations (as an annual average) exceeding the reference level and encourage radon reducing measures.

To fight against this threat, Fen Technology has developed the IoT connection of an intelligent, adaptable and versatile hybrid Radon sensor system composed by sensors, an Air Quality analyser and an external relay able to turn on additional fan-system (eolian and/or electric) when additional ventilation is required to eliminate situations of risk to human health.

Our software and hardware engineers have designed and developed the first NB (narrow band)-IoT connected device, fully integrated with a monitoring IoT platform, finding an eco-friendly solution for Radon real-time measurement and remediation to keep indoor Radon levels below 100 Bq/m3 level, preventing a harmful concentration of this gas.

We have presented the project to the European Commission and have been awarded the seal of Excellence, meaning that our solution has many possibilities of solving this worrying situation.

Fen Technology values being able to make the world a better place through innovation. So, once we understood that our knowledge in electronics could be of help in this field we didn’t hesitate to offer our services.
