The fact that 90 % of city dwellers breath in polluted air on a daily basis, according to the World Health Organization, is horrifying and very concerning for our health. Our German client Green City Solutions decided to do something about it. As a green tech company founded by a talented and dynamic group of friends they took a leap and blended a technological IoT (Internet of Things) solution together with the power of green using the characteristics of moss to build biotech filters that improve air quality. They ended up with what they call the CityTree.
From the outside, it may look like nothing more than a moss wall with an incorporated bench. But don’t be fooled by the appearance because the inside hides something much more sophisticated.
Using different types of moss, environmental toxins such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are bound while oxygen is produced and released into the air at the same time.
The integration of cutting edge IoT technology allows the collection of comprehensive information on status and performance. The surroundings of the device can also be measured to provide environmental data.
Lack of water and shade is a big issue for moss survival in the urban landscape. This obstacle has been overcome by including a fully automated irrigation system in the design.
The incorporated ventilation system can be regulated and help provide a pleasant cooling effect as the natural moisture qualities of the moss is exploited in a clever way.
Since the launch, they have successfully installed their moss trees in several countries internationally. With the right mindset and drive, we can do things to change and improve not only the quality of the air we breathe as in the case of Green City Solutions but also the quality of life.
